FEATURING THE WORLD’S LEADING MINDFULNESS EXPERTS

Overwhelmed with insomnia and an incurable autoimmune disease, Shannon Harvey needed to make a change. But while the award-winning health journalist found plenty of recommendations on diet, sleep and exercise, when she looked for the equivalent of a 30-minute workout for her mental wellbeing, there was nothing.

Worried for the future mental health of her kids who were growing up amidst epidemics of stress, anxiety, depression and addiction, in a world-first experiment, Shannon recruited a team of scientists to put mindful meditation to the test. But after a 30,000 kilometre journey from the bright lights of Manhattan to the dusty refugee camps of the Middle East, what begins as a self-experiment, transforms into a life-changing experience.

My Year of Living Mindfully is filled with compelling stories, interviews with 18 leading scientists, and unexpected insights that go to the heart of what it means to be human in the twenty-first century.

LEARN MORE ABOUT DENETTE MANN, LPC-S, RPT-S

In 2012 I enrolled in the MBSR (Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction) course as a 5-day intensive experience. I was lucky enough to take the course from Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn before he stopped doing the training himself. It was very difficult and truly divine, the experience of which was dramatic and life-changing. I was on a personal journey that I believed would also benefit every person who entered my therapy office. In 2014 I took another intensive course; the Mindful Self-Compassion course with Dr. Kristen Neff and Dr. Christopher Germer, the co-founders of the program and organization. The addition of self-compassion to mindfulness and my meditation regime enhanced my experience of both exponentially. It was life transformative. I easily made the decision to get more training, becoming a trained teacher, then a certified trainer, and onto special programs and volunteering my time and knowledge to the Dallas community teaching at SMU, offering free Introductions among many other activities.

I lived with a mean inner critic for much of my life. These two programs taught me how to transform that voice into one that supports me, is kind to me, and has become more of a companion than an angry part of me that I tried to cut out of my life. The difference in daily life experience is amazing. I owe so much to meditation, self-compassion, and the wonderful people who have created these accessible programs for all who desire it.

Join us this month for complimentary mindful self-compassion sessions via our  Facebook page and see more of what we offer at DenetteMann.com

LEARN MORE ABOUT DOCUMENTARY EVENTS®

Diane Feffer has been organizing Documentary Events® since 2010. From her very first documentary event, Diane knew that these docs had potential to impact people in a different way than feature films. To date, she has screened and organized over 62 documentary events. These docs have delved into a range of subjects, from the use of algorithms in the stock market to the everyday opioid crisis in communities across America.

Diane shares her thoughts here: Besides a source of entertainment, documentaries have purpose in three distinct ways : 1) they can be a catalyst for change , 2) they can help us realize how we're more connected to each other than we realize and 3) they help us visualize hope and growth potential. I'm happy for the opportunity to help launch the premiere of MY YEAR OF LIVING MINDFULLY. The film speaks to the epidemic of stress in modern day life. The evidence-based research in the film points you in the direction of incorporating a few minutes of mindfulness into each day. Our audience in Texas enjoyed THE CONNECTION: Mind Your Body and we expect the same with Shannon's second film. Read more about Documentary Events® we've organized in my latest blog post. Please contact us if you'd like to be on our mailing list and we look forward to connecting with you at our next virtual film release in September.
